History tells us that the Hebrews fell under the rule of different empires. They also at different times were either exiled or taken captive. We will take a look at scripture and other references to help build the foundation for this description.

Before we continue, it is vital that the reader understands that between 926 and 922 BCE, Israel was split into two kingdoms of Hebrews:

  • The Northern Kingdom of Israel: Issachar, Reuben, Asher, Zebulun, Manasseh, Ephraim, Dan, Gad, Naphtali and Levi
  • Southern Kingdom of Judah: Judah and Benjamin.

The Israelite’s capital was in Samaria and the Judaean’s capital was in Jerusalem.

DIVREI HAYAMIYM RI’SHON – 1 Chronicles 5:26, And the ELOHIYM of Yisra’el stirred up the ruach of Pul king of Ashshur (Assyria), and the ruach of Tiglath Pil’ecer (Tilgathpilneser) king of Ashshur (Assyria), and he carried them away, even the Re’uveniym (Reubenites), and the Gadiym (Gadites), and the half tribe of Menashsheh (Manasseh), and brought them unto Chalach (Halah), and Chavor (Habor), and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.

MELEKIYM SHENIY- 2 Kings 18:11-12, And the king of Ashshur (Assyria) did carry away Yisra’el unto Ashshurah (Assyria), and put them in Chalach (Halah) and in Chavor (Habor) by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of Madai (Medes): 12 Because they obeyed not the voice of YAHUAH ELOHAYHEM, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Mosheh (Moses) the servant of YAHUAH commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

TMH used the Assyrians as well as the Romans. The Assyrians conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE: Issachar, Reuben, Asher, Zebulun, Manasseh, Ephraim, Dan, Gad, Naphtali and Levi (they lived amongst all the tribes). These tribes weren’t given the option to return to their land, they were exiled and forced to disperse or scatter not only from Israel, but from each other. The 10 tribes of Israel became LOST, hint the term “the lost tribes of Israel” or “the 10 lost tribes of Israel.” One can imagine that if they’ve been separated from their land and people they will one day become separate from the god that they served, their culture and heritage.

The Southern Kingdom of Judah in 586 BCE, was conquered by Babylon. They were also relocated; however were NOT separated from their communities which allowed them to continue worshiping TMH and kept their culture intact. The book of Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 25 1-11 explains the destruction that came upon Judah, as a result of them being disobedient and engaging in pagan worship; nonetheless, there’s an indication of restoration and a covenant.

SIDE NOTE: Ezra 1:1 confirms Jeremiah 25:1-11. Both books are speaking of the Kingdom of Judah. Ezra 10:9 says that all the men of Yahudah and Binyamiyn (Benjamin) gathered themselves together unto Yerusalayim (Jerusalem) within three days. When we see “Yisra’el or Israel” in Ezra it might be referring to all 12 tribes…yes…BUT…we must also consider that “Yisra’el or Israel” may also be talking SOLELY about the Kingdom of Judah which only includes two tribes: Judah and Benjamin. This is why we should reference the book of Jeremiah in order to better understand who is being spoke of.

YIRMEYAHU – Jeremiah 13:19, The cities of the Negev (South) shall be shut up, and none shall open them: Yahudah (Judah) shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive… (vs. 24) Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness. 25 This is your lot, the portion of your measures from me, says YAHUAH; because you have forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.

YIRMEYAHU – Jeremiah 30:2, Thus speaks YAHUAH ELOHIYM of Yisra’el, saying, Write you all the words that I have spoken unto you in a cepher (book). 3 For, lo, the days come, says YAHUAH, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Yisra’el AND Yahudah, says YAHUAH: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

Later on, Nebuchadnezzar deported an estimated amount of 10,000 upper class Judaeans to Babylon. The lower class Judaeans were given the permission to remain in Judah. This was the beginning of Judah’s exile. In 597 BCE Nebuchadnezzar deported more, but the number was much smaller. King Cyrus of Persia, who conquered Babylon, allowed the Judaeans to return to their land in 537 BCE.

Let us speed ahead to 70 A.D. Here’s an insert from Rudolph R. Windsor’s book, From Babylon to Timbuktu: …Pompey to Julius, it has been estimated that over 1,000,000 Jews fled into Africa, fleeing from Roman persecution and slavery. The slave markets were full of black Jewish slaves…
SIDE NOTE: The only tribes that can be called Judaeans or Jews are the two from the Kingdom of Judah.

After the destruction of the Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 A.D., 40 years after Yahusha Hamashiach died (40 represents testing, trial period or probation), Hebrews were killed, some were taken captive and the rest of the Judaeans fled into Northern Africa and West Africa which at one time was called NEGROLAND!

(Zondervan Compact Bible Dictionary, Emphasis on “Negroes”)

(Top: Negroland, under it is Guinea and under the “N E” of Guinea is “Slave Coast.” Bottom: “Kingdom of Juda” (from 12 Tribes) and “Slave Coast” as seen in the top photo)

DEVARIYM – Deuteronomy 28:68, And YAHUAH shall bring you into Mitsrayim (Egypt/captivity) again with SHIPS, by the way whereof I spoke unto you, you shall see it no more again: and there he shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and and no man shall buy you (save you).

What nation of people documented in history were taken captive as bondmen and bondwomen and placed on SHIPS?

Myelinated Hebrew Israelites are the topic of discussion amongst those who hold PHDs to those who are in high school. This conversation is crossing cultural, language and color barriers.

Josephus in his writtings records that Judadeans were a nation of “Western Ethiopians.” Antiquities Book 1, Chapter 6, paragraph 2. The word “western” is significant bc most people don’t know that in ancient times, Ethiopia extended over immense territories in both Africa and Asia. Lets digress for a moment and take a look at some PDF inserts from Rudolph R. Windsor’s book, pages 14 &15 from Babylon to Timbuktu:

Focusing on the two Havilahs: one from Cush and the other from Joktan, who was the son of Eber, who descended from Shem. We can clearly see that one Havilah was Hemitic and one was Semitic. This is where the confusion comes because many assume that all Ethiopians came from Cush, but this is not so. We must remember that the word “Ethiopia or being Ethiopian” has a much broader range than the land we know as Ethiopia today or the people from there. Some of the Semitic Ethiopians are also known as Beta Israel or “House of Israel” in Ge’ez, the Ethiopian Semitic language.

Josephus is justified in saying “Western Ethiopians” because West and East Ethiopia were both common knowledge to those who lived during those times.

Negroland on the map above is why the “African American” man and woman were called Negroes, but today, you rarely hear a colored person identify themselves as a Negro, instead, you hear “black.”  For the more uneducated individual, they will say “nigger.” We the Negro are also from the Kingdom of Judah: Tribe of Judah or Tribe of Benjamin – we will add Tribe of Levi although we know they are not apart of the Kingdom of Judah, remember that the Tribe of Levi was apart of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. They were scattered amongst all of the tribes because of their priestly duties.

This is the “Last Captivity” for the Kingdom of Judah and we are indeed “THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK.”

Has TMH rejected and forgotten His people?

CEPHER ROMAIYM- Romans 11:1, I SAY then, Has YAHUAH cast away his people? Never. For I also am a Yisra’e’liy, of the seed of Avraham, of the tribe of Binyamiyn. 2 YAHUAH has not cast away His people which he foreknew…

Will TMH gather the His tribes?

YIRMEYAHU – Jeremiah 3:18, In those days the house of Yahudah shall walk with the house of Yisra’el, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

YECHEZQ’EL – Ezekiel 11:16-17, Therefore say, Thus says ADONAI YAHUAH; Although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. 17 Therefore say, Thus says ADONAI YAHUAH; I will even gather you from the people and assemble you out of he countries where ye have been scattered and I will give you the land of Yisra’el.

YECHEZQ’EL – Ezekiel 37:19, Say unto them, Thus says ADONAI YAHUAH; Behold, I will take the stick of Yoceph (Joseph), which is in the hand of Ephrayim, and the tribes of Yisra’el his fellows, and will put them with him even with the stick of Yahudah, and make them one stick and they shall be ONE in my hand.

This topic has inspired onsite documentaries on the continent of  Africa, it has inspired books and debates. Dr. Daniel Lis, author of “Jewish Identity Among the Igbo of Nigeria,” said in a speech in Jerusalem that “blackness” in Israel is identified with people from south Sudan and the Igbo people. The topical matter being Jews of color and blacks being Jews.

In 2008, a French ethnologist by the name of Edith Bruder wrote a book titled, “The Black Jews of Africa – History, Identity, Religion.” Bruder’s specialties are in African Judaism, religious dispersion, new movements centered around religion and religious societies that are related to one another.

In conclusion, you will be left with an insert of a review by Dr. Raphael Chijioke Njoku Associate Professor of History Idaho State University Pocatello, ID on Edith Bruder’s book mentioned above.

“Chapters 9 and 10 detail a number of African groups that have self-identified as Jews. These communities range from the widely known Ethiopians and Igbos, to the lesser known Zakhor of Mali, Balula Jews of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Lembe found in South Africa and Zimbabwe, the Jews of Rusape found in Zambia, the Tutsi of Rwanda and Burundi, the Kasuku of Kenya, and the Abayudaya of Uganda. Of particular interest are the motivations that led these ethnic groups in western, eastern, central, and southern regions of the continent to assert Jewish genealogy. Among other things, these groups wanted to connect kinships with the Patriarch Abraham, identifi ed in the Holy Bible as the chosen friend of God Almighty” (161-185).
